The new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have been out for a few weeks now, and a few customers emailed us asking for thoughts on potential impact to the mobile pages built on piJnz (and mobile websites in general).
(And after 2 weeks of waiting I finally got my new iPhone 5 in the mail on Sunday : )
Here are a few things worth mentioning:
New maps
With the new iOS 6 Apple has finally made the switch away from Google maps to its in-house mapping solution. Google maps app is no longer part of the iPhone.
Impact on mobile pages:
None that I see. piJnz mobile pages utilize embedded Google maps, or link to Google maps. The removal of Google maps app from iPhone has no impact on linking or embedding Google maps via the browser.
Although I've seen reports on how the new maps app can interfere with the browsing experience by launching itself on address links, I've not been able to duplicate this behavior.
YouTube app removed
You no longer see the YouTube icon on the iPhone's home screen. Apple has seriously decoupled itself from Google with this new iOS by removing the YouTube app also.
Impact on mobile pages:
None that I can see. piJnz mobile pages utilize embedded YouTube videos that still open and play just fine in the browser.
4G LTE network
iPhone 5 on ATT in my area comes with another added benefit - blazing fast internet access on its new 4G LTE network.
Impact on mobile pages:
With download speed faster than some home internet networks, surfing the internet on 4G LTE is a really awesome experience. Needless to say, the mobile pages not only look even more beautiful with the new retina display, but also load in a split second.
Passbook
Passbook is a new digital wallet application from Apple designed to store membership cards, tickets, coupons, and boarding passes.
Impact on mobile pages:
The list of Passbook-supported apps seems rather small, and we'd be curious to see how it expands over time and what impact is has on small local merchants looking to issue mobile coupons or set up loyalty programs.
